Physical fitness can be an important part of self-care for massage therapists-and may even be helpful in understanding the practice of massage. This session will cover key concepts in physical fitness including the functions, responses and adaptations of body systems to exercise. Topics such as body composition and weight management will also be included within the scope of massage therapy practice.

At the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Distinguish between the different health components of physical fitness;
  • Describe the physical and mental benefits of increased activity;
  • Review the basics of anatomy, physiology and biomechanics as relating to the functions, responses and adaptations of body systems to exercise;
  • Identify and apply various exercise training methods and techniques;
  • Explain the relevance of physical fitness for effective self-care and its role within the scope of massage therapy practice.
